Do you have any suggestions of how to “design” hair for a 40-something who has thinning hair (and trendy glasses)? Should I just go with the standard “buzz” military cut?

It depends on the severity of the situation, but there’s usually only one way to go when it comes to thinning hair…Off with it. You don’t want to look like one of those guys who’s trying to hang onto something that’s no longer there. A buzz adds personality, it shows people you can go with flow and it’s a pretty badass look too. Not to mention extremely convenient.
